Obituary of John Hugh Campbell
It is with profound sadness in our hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, husband and friend, John Hugh Campbell on February 12, 2024, in London Ontario, at the age of 91.
Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, to the late Alec and Catherine (nee MacPherson) Campbell, John was predeceased by his infant daughter, Mary, and his brothers James, Joseph, George, his sister Mary, and in-laws Roderick and Eva MacKenzie, Roderick MacKenzie, Leone Campbell, John Roussel and Donna (MacKenzie) MacNeil.
Cherished husband of Joyce Irene (MacKenzie) of 68 years. Devoted father of Doreen Campbell (London), Jim (Susan) Campbell (London), Deanne (Mark) Babcock (London), Kathryn (Hemsley) Henry (London), Paul Campbell (London), Linnea (Colin) Cameron (Lucknow), Rod (Robin Farley) Campbell (London), Mary-Jo Campbell (Hamilton), Karen (Steve) Foster (London) and Ian Campbell (London). The circle of love expanded effortlessly to all 22 grandchildren and 4 precious great-grandchildren. He will be missed by in-laws Deanne Roussel (London), Jerry MacNeil (Winnipeg), Joan Campbell (Sydney), and Dorothy MacKenzie (Sydney), and by many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
John studied at St Francis Xavier University and the University of New Brunswick, pursuing his life-long passion for learning, infused with a commitment to community service and social justice. He held a deep affection for Cape Breton and shared his love of music, sports and creativity with us all. He and Joyce moved to Ontario in 1964, settling in London in 1968. John was a professor and registrar at King’s College, Western University. Throughout his lifetime he quietly volunteered his time and energy to numerous organizations: London’s Co-op Housing and the London Inter-Community Health Centre, to name a couple. He will be remembered for his deep dedication to his family, his wise counsel and advocacy, his profound spirituality and his compassionate, inquisitive nature.
John’s family would like to express their heart-felt gratitude to all of the staff at McCormick Home who supported him and demonstrated such compassionate care throughout his years in residence.
A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date.
