Obituary of Susan Elizabeth Dykes
Susanne Elizabeth Dykes (Scaldwell)
August 2nd, 1943 - October *8th, 2023
Susanne (Sue) E. Dykes, age 80, of Grand Bend, formerly of London, passed away
peacefully surrounded by her loved ones at University Hospital after a brief battle with
cancer.
Born in London, Ontario at Victoria hospital, Sue was the middle child and only
daughter of parents Bud and Elvina Scaldwell. She grew up and lived in London for the
majority of her life. Growing up in the Manor Park community, Sue was very active in
sports and hobbies. She was a graduate of Wheable High School and earned an
Administrative Certificate. After graduation, Sue began her career at EMCO.
It was on the bus leaving work when 18-year-old Sue was spotted by a 20-year-old
Gary on a wintery day. After much turmoil, Gary worked up the courage to ask her for a
date by the Pepsi Cooler. On September 3rd, 1966, they married and began their life
which would be shared together for 57 years.
Gary and Sue bought their very first house on Lola Street in Byron in July, 1970. From
there, the house became a home as they grew their family with the addition of three
wondrous children who were born and raised on Lola Street. Friends became family as
life long relationships blossomed on the corner of Lola Street and Belvedere. Sue grew
to become the matriarchic Mom to the neighbourhood kids and the door was always
open with snacks readily available.
During this time on Lola Street, Sue returned to work and dedicated many years to
Hutton House and Boler Mountain (London Ski Club) . She loved being a team member
to both organizations and was a dedicated employee. She felt so lucky to have met
many wonderful people who became dear friends and who she made many fond
memories with over the years.
In 1999, a new chapter began as Sue and Gary moved to Grand Bend to be close to
the beach. They lived in Grand Cove Estates and created many new friendships
throughout the area. So many new traditions and memories started, as all neighbours
on South Winds Court became a new extended family. Sue embraced the beach life,
whether spending time in Grand Bend or at Long Point. She loved the sunsets across
Lake Huron and sand between her toes.
Winters were now spent in Florida at Panama City Beach. The countdown to Florida
was always looked forward to and the route well planned in advanced. There were
certain stops on the route that could not be missed.
Sue was an avid gardener and loved to keep her lawn manicured. No matter where she
lived, her yard was always envied by many neighbours and received many awards over
the years. Sue made sure the exterior and interior of their home was always decorated
for every special occasion and holiday.
Sue never gave up her passion and love for sports, all sports. But Sue’s heart held a
special place for the Toronto Maple Leafs. She never gave up on them.
Predeacesed by parents Bud and Elvina Scaldwell and older brother Edward Scaldwell.
Survived by brother and best friend, Doug (Scarlett) Scaldwell of Strathroy.
Beloved husband Gary William Dykes of 57 years and loving adored mother of Jacki
Kostuk (Stephen), Jason Dykes of St. Thomas and Jeff Dykes of London.
Loving, proud Nan to “her sweet boy” Kirby Kostuk (Keelan).
Predeceased by brother in law Bill Dykes (Charlotte) and missed by sister in law
Sandra Laabs (Lanny).
Loved by many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Soul sister to Carol McDonald, best friend of Robbie Warrington, and Vice President
and founding member of the “Tipsy Girls”.
