Obituary of Judith Larsen Hunter

(February 22, 1940 – June 2, 2023) Judith (Judy) Hunter, a beloved wife, devoted mother, treasured grandmother, and dear friend, departed from this world on June 2, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and grace. She touched the lives of all who knew her and will forever be remembered for her kindness, tolerance, compassion, and unwavering commitment to those she loved. We deeply mourn her loss. She leaves behind husband of 59 years Duncan, children Jim, Karen (Andrew) and William, and grandchildren Matthew, Callum, Hannah, Grace, and Remy. Born on February 22, 1940, Judy flourished in a close-knit community in both San Bernardino and Fresno, California. The much beloved and adored daughter of Otto and Evelyn Larsen, Judy's natural leadership and warm heart were evident from an early age. After completing her high school education, Judy was one of two students from a very large class to go on to university. At UCLA she completed a five-year degree in education and was actively involved in student governance and her sorority (Sigma Kappa), through which she met many amazing women who became life-long friends. After about three years into her teaching career, she made the mistake of meeting and marrying a Canadian. She was spirited away in 1966, late in her first pregnancy and in an MGB, to London, Ontario where her husband joined the Chemistry Department of the University of Western Ontario. Her parents and friends had trouble comprehending why someone would leave sunny Southern California for the frozen tundra of Canada. The Chemistry Department at UWO became their extended family, one that continues to love and appreciate them. Judy loved teaching and excelled at it, but provincial regulations deemed her overqualified. Thus began a highly active volunteer career, including leadership roles in several organizations, notably the first Beaver Colony in Southwestern Ontario, Girl Guides, American Women’s Club, Oakridge Quilters, UNICEF (her children remember counting and sorting thousands of coins each Halloween) and the London Curling Club. The latter of which included her much-celebrated, and highly coveted, hand-knit Banting Curling team sweaters. Judy travelled to many countries before they were common destinations, both out of a shared interest with her husband and for his enthusiasm for research and planning. This included two year-long sabbaticals in France that truly tested her linguistic ability but broadened her love of people and food. Judy's love for her children was only out shone by her love for and pride in her grandchildren. A celebration of Judy's life will be held on Monday, June 12th (11am-1pm) at Bellamere Winery, 1260 Gainsborough Road London, Ontario.
