Obituary of Dorothy Marion Wallis

Dorothy (Dot) passed away peacefully on May 11th, 2023, in her 97th year, with family by her side. Beloved wife of her late husband Norman, incredible Mom to Kirk (Kim) and David (Kathy), cherished Nanny to Christopher (Emily), Alyssa (Peter), Dana (Brandon) and Derek (Kyleigh). Adoring Great Grandmother to Megan, Sunday, Boden and Olivia. Pre-deceased by her loved daughter-in-law, Barbara Beach-Wallis. She will be missed by nieces and nephews and their families too. Born and raised in Kitchener, Dorothy met her future husband, Norm, while ice skating at Victoria Park, and discovered they were attending the same high school! She was in the four year commercial program, and during her four years, won several public speaking awards, became student council President and became so proficient typing, was asked to teach a class of women who were becoming civil servants in Ottawa, and a class from the Women’s Army Corps stationed in Kitchener. A few years after graduation, she married Norm, and they moved to London in 1951, where she was a stay at home Mom to Kirk and David, then eventually went to work as a part time secretary at Westdale Public School, and moved on to an eight year career as a secretary at the ETV Centre (Educational Television Centre, part of H.B. Beal Secondary School). After ‘retiring’ to stay home again, she volunteered with several organizations, but became involved with Women’s Community House (Now operating as Anova), and became their first Chairperson. She and Norm were very active members of Metropolitan United Church since their move to London. Dorothy and Norm enjoyed traveling during their working careers and in retirement. Multiple trips to Europe and other destinations were enjoyed, but their favorite vacation was always visiting friends in Newfoundland during the summer. She will always be remembered for her love of family and friends, her sense of fashion, her unbridled home decorating skills, stomach-busting dinner parties, and bridge parties way back when, and all the people she met along her incredible and long life journey. We will always be eternally grateful for the love and wisdom she shared with all of us, and will be incredibly missed forever. A special thank you to Dr. Bevan and the Palliative Care Team at Parkwood Hospital. Cremation has taken place. A service of remembrance will take place on May 25, 2023, 11:00 a.m. at Metropolitan United Church.
